A mother’s love is one of the most powerful thing in the world, and it’s true throughout the animal kingdom. Nearly every mother would do anything for their kids, putting their life above their own.
That was the inspiring story of one abandoned dog, who gave birth to and nursed her puppies all with a badly broken leg 🥺❤️
The story was shared by the SPCA of Wake County on September 3. A female dog now named Lizard (aka Lizzie) was found abandoned on a bench. Someone found her with her “tail tucked and shaking like a leaf” — and soon realized she wasn’t alone.
It turned out that Lizzie was protecting three newborn pups underneath her body. She had been tirelessly caring for the pups — even while dealing with her own severe, painful injury.
Rescuers discovered that Lizzie’s back leg femur had broken in half, and she also had a hip injury. Lizzie had given birth to the pups with the broken leg and was still caring for them like a champ.
“This girl has been powering through probably the hardest time in her life (by far), but through sheer will and without hesitation, Lizzie has put her own welfare aside and managed to raise three perfect, plump, happy, healthy little puppies,” the SPCA wrote.
Lizzie and her pups were taken in by the SPCA of Wake County, but vets had to wait to really address her pain. She needed surgery, but they didn’t want to separate the mother and pups while they were nursing as it could “put their fragile lives at risk.” Instead, they did what they could do stabilize the leg and make her comfortable.
Now that some time has passed, Lizzie will undergo surgery this week to amputate her shattered leg. After that, she and her pups — now named Newt, Gecko and Chameleon — will be placed up for adoption.
The SPCA hopes that this inspiring and heroic mama dog will find the great new home she deserves. “And after all she’s survived, we hope a swift adoption will bring nothing but all of life’s sweetest spoils,” they wrote.
According to McClatchy News, two of the three pups have pending adoptions. Lizzie and her remaining pup will be available soon on the shelter’s adoption page.
What an incredible mother, caring for her pups despite all the pain she was going through — we wish her a great new home and all the best in the world 🥺❤️
