Speeding driver switches seats, claims dog was driving car to avoid DUI arrest

Many people make up crazy excuses to avoid getting in trouble, but one recent story is truly unbelievable.

The Springfield, Colorado Police Department shared the news on Facebook on May 14, reporting on one very strange DUI arrest.

Traffic officers pulled over a man speeding 52 miles per hour in a 30 mph zone. As police approached, the driver abruptly tried to switch places with his passenger, and then “claimed he was not driving.”

Which might have made sense… except his passenger was his dog.

You guessed it, alcohol was involved: “The male party showed clear signs of intoxication,” the police wrote. They also said that when the man was asked about his alcohol consumption, the driver “ran from the officer.”

Alas, he did not get away: “The male party was apprehended quickly within about 20 yards of the vehicle,” Springfield Police wrote.

The driver had reportedly gotten lost in Springfield while traveling from Las Animas to Pueblo. He was found to have two active warrants out for his arrest.

He was booked at Baca County Jail for his warrants and also charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving while ability impaired, driving under suspension, speeding 20-24 over and resisting arrest.

His furry accomplice did not face any legal trouble: “The dog does not face any charges and was let go with just a warning,” the police wrote.

The dog was also reportedly put in the care of an acquaintance of the driver while he is in jail.

This is one of the most crazy-but-true stories we’ve heard in a while. You have to wonder what goes through someone’s head in a situation like this — and why they thought a dog driving a car would even be a good excuse.

We’re glad this guy is in jail and his dog got off scot-free! Please share this unbelievable story!
