Man wants break-up after girlfriend objects to dog sleeping in their bed — internet reacts

A controversial topic among dog owners is whether or not to allow your pet to sleep in your bed. Some people love to cuddle up with their furry friends at night, others think it’s disruptful and unhygienic.

It’s a subject that has brought one man on the verge of ending things with his girlfriend, who has some major issues with him allowing his dog in bed. He asked for advice on Reddit, and people had a lot to say…

Reddit user Distinct-Season1765 shared the dilemma on the advice subreddit r/AITA — which stands for “am I the a**hole.” People share their situations and ask if they’re in the wrong.

He wrote that his girlfriend recently moved in, and it’s caused some conflict between her and his dog of 7 years. The poster has always let the dog sleep in bed with him, but his girlfriend doesn’t like it: “She pushed my dog at his chest with two hands the other night and gets a little angry about him sleeping in the bed,” he wrote on Reddit.

The man wrote that he always washed the sheets and pillowcases, thinking his girlfriend was mad about the dog’s hairs in the bed. However, he also thinks that there are other issues between his girlfriend and dog that are affecting his relationship: “I don’t like her being aggressive to my dog and find it a turn off,” he wrote. “She thinks my dog is jealous and doesn’t like her.”

He asked Reddit whether he was in the right to end things out of support for his loyal pet, whom he has had since puppyhood.

“I think she’s being dramatic and I absolutely will get rid of her before him,” he wrote. “He’s been my healing in life and taught me a lot about anger and not being depressed so as to keep him safe and happy and fed. He’s like my son, brother, and best friend. He’s made me suck it up when depressed and been my support.”

“Should I give her ultimatum or just move on to someone who respects my boundary? And am I crazy for putting my dog that’s has slept beside me for 7 years over a new relationship?”

Users on Reddit had mixed reactions to the story, with many supporting his loyalty to his longtime dog: “If someone didn’t like my dog, that person certainly would not become my SO, period. It’s a no brainer.

Did your gf know your dog sleeps in bed? If so she could‘ve mentioned any issue with that before moving in and you two could have had a conversation about it.”

She’s showing you who she is and what her expectations are now. These are not going to change down the line. I had a bf who was the same with my cat. I thought he would warm up to her, maybe love her even. But nope, it ended up being the same fight for years and finally came down to an ultimatum of him or the cat.”

However, others came to the girlfriend’s defense — especially after the poster mentioned that his dog was a 70-pound pit bull.

Pushing a 70 pound pitbull away from you when you’re trying to sleep is NOT aggressive lmao,” one reply reads. “It’s wild that you’re trying to frame her as some sort of animal abuser when she’s just trying to set some normal boundaries.”

There’s loving your dog, and then there’s putting your dogs comfort level [above] the human being your suppose to be in a relationship,” another wrote.

Others agreed that dogs in beds was a big no-no: “I LOVE dogs, but not on my bed. You have to find a girl who want dog on bed, and plus other things you have to work on to make the relationship works.”

Ultimately, most people just agreed that the man and his girlfriend might just not be compatible, if this issue is so important for him. “I don’t think you two are compatible then,” the top comment states.

I don’t let my dogs sleep on the bed but if it bothers her that much and it’s important to you, it shows that you’re not compatible,” another agreed.

What do you think of this situation? Would you break up with someone who didn’t like your dog being in bed? Please share this story with your thoughts.
