Botswana is a landlocked country in Southern Africa that experiences annual floods, producing a lush wildlife habitat. Even though most animals in Botswana are struggling, there are still abandoned and injured dogs.
The story of a paralyzed dog from Botswana has touched millions of people. The poor little dog had no choice but to walk for miles herself in search of help due to a damaged spine.
The poor puppy was lucky.
Susanne Vogel was at the time the leader of a group of volunteers working in the northern Okavango region who rescued the puppy. They were engaged in an initiative to prevent conflicts between elephants and humans. The squad was surprised when they looked up to find the poor puppy dragging himself towards their lonely tent.
When the puppy saw the volunteer team, she approached them and asked for help. The poor puppy, finally called Poppy, definitely needed help.
“She basically crawled into our study camp because her hind legs were paralyzed.”‘She could not walk,’ observed Susanne, ‘but she was full of love and begged for help.”
The crew immediately assessed Poppy’s state of health. Her spine had been fractured and she was paralyzed, so the poor dog had certainly had an accident. After washing and feeding the injured animal, they took her to the doctor. But they did not receive any good news there.
Poppy was examined and determined to be barely seven months old. Although surgery could help the poor puppy, his life prospects were minimal, if at all.
The researchers, on the other hand, were optimistic. They noticed Poppy’s individuality.
Despite the fact that she could not risk surgery, Poppy began therapy and rehabilitation activities to help her strengthen her legs. At the same time, the volunteers worked tirelessly to collect money for Poppy’s future medical needs and care. They asked for the public’s help to save Poppy’s life, and animal lovers around the world jumped at the chance.
Despite the fact that she is still too sick to have surgery, Poppy does not seem to be uncomfortable.
Poppy was delighted when we gave her her own pair of wheels to gallop on!
After many hours of physical treatment, the brave puppy has finally become stronger and can now stand on all fours.
In addition, the adorable and lively puppy was finally accepted into a permanent family. Her permanent mother and father are MaryBeth Hastings from Washington, DC, and they brought her back to America. Poppy’s life with her family is just beginning!
